Sight and Sound is a project built upon the task of producing 1000 photographs. The content, themes, and ideas of the photographs were entirely up to me. What I landed on, was a performative piece, displaying the strongest 25. The images acted akin to journal entries or snapshots throughout the day. The shooting did not consist of rhyme or reason rather it relied heavily on intuition and gut feeling.
I was very much inspired by photographer Alec Soth, in which he performed a piece like this with a drummer and percussionist. The root of this performance is a conversation. It is the pairing of something visual and something auditory and the aftermath that follows. The photographer shows the photo and the musician then plays according to the image being shown. Both performers trust their gut and act on intuition.
This project is near and dear to me so I decided to have my younger brother be the musician. His instrument of expertise is the bass guitar and the blend of the images with the melodies, chords, and notes being played created this unique interpretation. It cultivated this artistic response, which revealed so much more than the visual representation of the photos. It was both spontaneous and curated which ultimately bridged the gap between visual and auditory.
